Blyth Rugby - Club History

 

Blyth RFC was founded in 1921 by a man called Norman Jackson.

The first game was on the 26th Sept 1921, versus Seghill. We won 20 - 0.

Ex Blyth Player, George Newstead became Secretary of the West Australia Rugby Union in 1950 and was awarded the MBE in 1975.

The first AGM was held in the King's Head Hotel, where the club's income was announced for the year as £82.10s and the total expenditure was £81.10s.

On September 14th 1922, Blyth fielded it's first 2nd Team and beat Ashington by a score of 5 - 3.

In 1937, due to financial difficulties among other things, Blyth ceased to exist.

In 1961 a man named Bernie Cranmer, Snr, gathered a few willing men and decided to reform Blyth Rugby Football Club.

On April 20th 1961, the club colours of Black and Emerald 4" hoops were adopted.

The first captain of the new Blyth RFC was G. Heatley.

In 1962 Blyth introduced their first junior side of under 18's, in the second round of their cup competition they were stuffed 3 - 67 by Rockcliff Juniors.

In 1962 a Mr Jimmy Bell became an active member of Blyth RFC - He is still giving 100% as I Write this!

in 1967 Blyth RFC secured the use of the Cricket Club's bar.

Season 1971-72 saw Blyth 1st XV win 28 of 37 games, scoring 1044 points and only conceded 235.

192 was the year Blyth reached their first ever cup final, but where beaten by 'Northern Panthers' in the Northumberland Junior Shield.

The amalgamation of the Cricket & Rugby Club was announced in 1974.

In 1975, Blyth won the Northumberland Junior Shield, they beat Gosforth 2nd's (now Newcastle Falcons) 23 - 19.
