Under 16's Rothbury Camp

The trip to Rothbury on the 10th and 11th August proved to be a resounding success. Eleven players and three coaches traveled to Rothbury on the 10th August, the itinerary was as follows:

10th August

9.30 am leave Blyth arrive Rothbury campsite at 10.30am. 10.30 - 11.15am pitch tents, make camp, secure goods. 11.15 parked at Lordenshaws - 5000 year old hill fort, from here we embarked on our walk.

We climbed the three peaks of Simonside hills, lunched on the summit of Simonside Craggs. breathtaking views of the Cheviots (see Picture one), the coast, and the pine forest and tracked back to our starting point, a round trip of around 6-8 miles arrived back at campsite 3.30pm

3.45pm left campsite for Thropton Village. We parked up and walked two miles top a secluded stretch of the Coquet river were the lads enjoyed a swim. The Coquet is world famous for its Large Trout, but on a summer afternoon, once our lads got in, there was more small tiddlers than large trout. (see picture two)

Returned to campsite at 6.30pm for tea.

7.30pm Assault course challenge.

8.30pm Coaching session

9.45pm Free Time - Coaches worn out!!!!!

Friday 11th August

5.10am Wake up call from a field of sheep (Mel tells me that it was Joe Miller and Graham Tuttiett dressed up!)

5.10am Breakfast, trip to Rothbury village

8.30am Load bus for swimming trip, at Thropton again (after a vote, hill walking lost)

9.00am Swim

10.00am Impromptu coaching session on river bank. A passing farmer offers us the use of his meadow in the shadow of the purple heather clad Simonside Hills, whilst RAF tornado jets on exercise buzzed the fields, what an experience for all concerted.

After another swim in the freezing river we returned to camp. The coaches sat back whilst the lads cooked and served up beans, hot dogs and pie, tea and coffee.

After a relaxing break we broke camp and returned to Blyth, arriving back just after 3.00pm

May I take this opportunity to thank the chairman Mr. A Heinzman who authorized the payment of the additional insurance, and the member of the youth Committee for their support. We were fortunate to have with us on the trip the club coach Mr. Joe Miller, his coaching initiatives and Ghost stories were well received. As a team building exercise the trip was an enormous success.
