The Alston Limestone Company Ltd was founded in 1908 as a quarrying company, with limestone quarries in Alston and Nenthead areas of Cumbria.
The Company carried out the Civil Engineering work associated with it's initial quarry installations with it's own workforce. The first project in 1908 included the construction of a rail link to it's main quarry in Alston with associated tunnelling under the main Alston road. Thereafter Civil Engineering work was carried out for other Quarrying and Mining Companies in the area.
For the next thirty years the Civil Engineering workload gradually increased typically including Bridgework's, Rail Installations, Drainage, Sewerage, Road Construction and Surfacing. However until the sale of it's interests it A.R.C. in 1938, Quarrying including the production of coated stone, remained it's principal activity.
The majority of the overall workload is undertaken by the company's own workforce supported by a substantial plant fleet based at the Birtley Headquarters. The working area includes North East England, Cumbria and Yorkshire.
Design and Construction work, mainly associated with Industrial Infrastructure Developments is also carried out the Company having it;s own design team and supporting surveying department. We employ external Consultants to undertake the design of larger projects. The design of highways and all other work undertaken by the Company is within the scope of ALCO's fully accredited Quality Management System (compliant with BS EN ISO 9001:1994) which further emphasises the long standing commitment to quality.
The Company is now part of the Minorco International Mining and Quarrying Group, and as such enjoys the benefits of substantial financial and technical support, but still retains the traditional standards of an old established local Company.
